Historical Fiction

I chose this story because I love the stories about the women who played baseball while the men were at war during WWII, and in particular I love the movie this book was based off of, A League of Their Own. This story is about a man who recruits women to play for his baseball team so that the club won’t go bankrupt. It depicts one woman who he recruited to play baseball during this time who is just as talented as the men who played before her.

The illustrations in this book look to be either acrylic or gouache. They are very simplistic and cartoon-like in style. There are several pages that feature vignettes or small illustrations surrounded by negative space. The colors are bright and vibrant and reflect the spunky attitude of the women that the story portrays.

I think this book could be used in any elementary classroom depending on the lesson that it accompanied. For younger grades, it could be used to introduce a writing prompt about unexpected roles. For older grades it could be used to introduce a project on WWII’s effect on the U.S.’s economy. This book has been awarded an ALA Amelia Bloomer Selection, a Parent’s Guide Children’s Media Award Winner, a Kansas City Award Winner, a Book-of-the-Month Club Selection, a Georgia Children’s Book Award Nominee, and Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, Historical Fiction Booklist, Highly Recommended
